Thanks for stopping by my blog to read some tips and tricks when it comes to posing sweet babies during a studio newborn session. Many parents adore these stunning, curly poses because they replicate how baby is during their time in the womb. I love photographing newborns on bean bag since there is nothing overtaking the nature of these beautiful little human beings.

My name is Sissi Wang and I’m a Top 10 Newborn Photographer in Sydney who specializes in posed newborn photography  I am an influencer on Youtube, Pinterest, Instagram.

SCHEDULE BABY ACCORDINGLY

4-14 Days is an ideal age for newborn photography. Since this age baby is still womb alike and being very flexible. They sleep during the day being less disturbed by the environment makes posing relatively achievable.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Bean bag poses we tend to keep poses and props simple. Being a minimalist styling, bean bag could be challenge though. The only accessories I would use is pillows, rabbit furs, or small plankets/wraps

SAFETY

Remember safety is always the priority. I never force baby into any poses. If the baby is unsettled, always settle down him/her first before putting into a certain pose. Alway alway do the froggy pose with photoshop composite. Make sure you keep the baby in your arm’s reach and with a second pair of eyes to spot the baby at all times.

FIRM BEAN BAG THAT’S TIGHTLY PACKED

My bean bag is tightly packed and filled to the brim with polyester balls and shredded foams. The more firm your bean bag is, the more supported baby is and this also helps to make sure baby does not sink into the bean bag. We want to see each adorable little toe, facial feature, and also make sure baby is curled up nicely.

WARMER IS BETTER

Because your womb, or uterus, is in the core of your body, baby is used to a warm environment of 27 degrees. Baby has spent 9 months in a warm hot tub and enjoys being in a warmer environment. Remember: baby cannot regulate their body temperature always, even if full term, and a baby’s body surface is about three times greater than an adults, compared to the weight of his/her body (source – Stanford Children’s). Because of this, babies lose heat rapidly. In order to pose baby in these sweet, curly poses and help soothe baby, it is best to create an environment that mimics the womb. Often, parents worry the room is too warm, but by keeping all of these facts in mind, it’ll help you understand that by keeping the studio at an optimal temperature, baby is neither too hot or too cold and they can maintain a comfortable temperature.

I personally keep my studio at 26-28 degrees through the use of heater / air conditioning. I also have several small, mobile space heaters on hand that can be placed 3 feet or so from the baby so that they have warm air when needed. Baby’s comfort is always on the forefront of my mind. While we may feel a little warm, no one is ever sweating buckets. 80 degrees is the warmest it’ll ever be. Here in Houston, that’s almost chilly compared to the type of weather we usually experience, ha!

WHITE NOISE

When babies are growing, this is is what they hear. Photographing a sleeping baby is a breeze. But what about when it starts to cry? Babies can be quite unpredictable, and being a newborn photographer means knowing how to deal with a fussy, crying baby. You will need something that can help calm them, and many photographers advise using a baby shusher. However, if you are on a budget, you can also download a white noise app called Sound Sleeper on your smartphone.

POSING PILLOW SETS

My posing pillows are from the original photo blocks. They are quite pricey but you can get some similar ones on Etsy
Alternatively make your own posing pillows just like how you would make a small pillow. I made mine in various sizes. There are also even some nifty DIY options you can do, too! For instance, when I first started working with newborn photography, I used bags of rice, lentils or beans because they’re firm and sturdy.

KEEP YOUR FABRIC TAUNT AND TIGHT

The more taunt and tight the fabric is, the less wrinkles you’ll have to remove when editing the images during post processing and you’ll also have a smoother, more seamless final look to your newborn images. Always clamp the fabrics on your frame or somewhere you can stretch it nicely.
